Frequently asked questions

The questions we get on almost every quote. If yours isn't here, call us — we would rather talk it through than have you buy the wrong product.

Do I need to prepare the ground first?

It depends on the product. Mud Control Grids can be laid straight onto mud in most horse and light-vehicle applications. Heavy Duty Ground Grids, Hanpave and Paving Stone carry vehicle loads and need a compacted, free-draining base designed for the traffic and subgrade.

How well does it drain?

Water passes through the open cells and granular fill into the sub-base rather than sheeting off the surface. That reduces runoff volume, standing water and erosion at gateways and entrances.

What loads can it take?

Ratings vary by product, up to load class SLW 60 (60 metric tonnes) per DIN 1072 on the heaviest elements. Actual site performance always depends on the base beneath the product — see each product page for its published rating.

How do I cut it?

Use a circular saw, jigsaw or handsaw — hanit® works like hardwood. Angle grinders are unsuitable and will melt rather than cut the material. It also accepts standard wood screws with high pull-out resistance.

Can I plow snow or drag the surface?

Yes, with care. Keep the blade slightly raised or fit shoes so it rides on the fill rather than catching cell walls. Rubber-edged blades are the safest option.

What do I fill the grids with?

Angular gravel for vehicle areas, sharp sand for horse walkways and turnout, and a topsoil root zone where you want a grassed finish. For livestock, a sand topping layer over the grid is recommended for comfort underfoot.

How much does a pallet cover?

Roughly 348 to 671 ft² depending on the product. The coverage calculator on this site gives units, pallets and total weight for your exact area.

How is it shipped and what are the lead times?

Product ships palletized from our Texas inventory, typically within 5 business days for stock items. Non-stock items and large volumes are quoted with a factory lead time.

Is there a warranty?

hanit® carries a 20-year material warranty. Note that for Paving Stone, non-observance of the published laying instructions voids the warranty.

Is the material safe around animals and plants?

Yes. hanit® is certified non-toxic per DIN EN 71-3, carries the Blue Angel eco-label, and is harmless to flora, fauna and groundwater. It also resists oils, brines, acids and salt water.
